Stanwell Village In 1950s

A Memory of Stanwell.

I was about 4 when my parents and baby sister came to live in Stanwell in 1954. We lived on Town Lane in a house (long demolished) opposite the road leading to the church. I have many very happy memories of the few years we lived there. We moved in 1961/62. I remember 2 blacksmiths, Rayners shop where I tried marmite for the first time, Dr Venables , the town hall and doing some shows there, the woods and pond near the church and so much more. I also remember the fair that came every May holiday and the tuck shop and the empty house that was known as Stanwell Place. I went to Town Farm School, but went on a school bus to Shortwood Common Infants in Staines. I have a vivid memory of going to a birthday party at Dr Venables's house where black and white cartoons were shown on an empty white wall - Minnie and Mickey Mouse . It seems as if my friends and I just ran free and played in the woods, roller skated up and down the quiet road opposite and watched the horses being shoed etc etc When we first went there there were no houses at the back of ours, and I remember my mother saying she couldn't see me when I was in the grass out there. I still like to drive through the village whenever I'm in the area. I just looked at some of the photos on this website, and so much came back to me.
