You Can Take The Boy And Girl Out Of Stanwell But You Cant Take Stanwell Out Of The Boy And Girl

A Memory of Stanwell.

Wow !! what a trip down memory lane, i read all the memories and can relate to most of them. We moved to Stanwell in the early 50's after my Father got a job at BOAC , my mum ended up at BEA at Hatton Cross. We lived in Everest Road, just off Clare Rd, the only house there for a while until they built the rest of the estate. I ended up living in the Village near the Wheatsheaf Pub but my local seemed to be the 3 Crowns in Long Lane for a few years, plus the Swan, The Rising Sun, The 5 Bells and the Happy Landing on the odd occasion although my father did work some times as a barman there. I went to Lord Knivetts Scool for a year then Town Farm infants and Juniors. Worked like every one else at the airport for a cargo agents. I remember the fairs both in the village and in Hollywell Way, iImade a lot of life long friends in Stanwell , some of them still live there , it was a great place to grow up in . I lived there from when i was 3 until i was 53 so saw a lot of changes during that time but Stanwell then never seemed to lose its Spirit. When i am on business at the airport now I always stay at the Stanwell Hall hotel and normally have a wander around the village and the pubs ( that are still there ).There have been a lot of changes and it now seems to have lost a lot of the friendly atmosphere it once had , maybe that's just a sign of the times . Last time there i went to my Mums grave in Town Lane opposite Town Farm School, I do recognise a lot of the names in there on the head stones some of who I went to school with . I now live in the Peak District but my Children who were all born in Stanwell still live near by . Great memories of a childhood that was free although sometimes tough.

Great memory - you summed it up! I remember the fairs, the pubs and also working for the airport cargo agents. I was born in 1955 and grew up in Stanwell. I went to St. Anne's School in Short Lane.
I still go back to visit family. I love your comment that it 'was free although sometimes tough'. It certainly was!
our paths must have crossed at sometime Lorraine in one of the many pubs ...
I remember the walk back from secondary school, when getting off the bus at the bulldog and walking home to Clare Road…..opposite my mate Stephen Lewis’ house (who posted last year) and having to quicken the pave as you passed by the feral dogs who roamed free around Viola Avenue ! Apart from that life was great growing up in stanwell. Some of those pictures are so evocative they actually brought a tear to my eye. I’d forgotten how rural the old stanwell village, oaks road stores the church, and some of the houses, all were. Great childhood, great friends !
Yes it was always a relief to get passed Viola Ave if you were walking , even across the other side of the road you were not safe .....
