Portwood Memories

A Memory of Stockport.

I have vivid memories of the slippery rock in Vernon Park. Other memories from the park were, the bench in the shelter at the lower entrance, I used to run around on top of the bench. The rhodedendron bushes, they were great for dens. I loved the museum, I think they had a butterfly collection. My dad taught me to ride my two wheeler and to roller skate in Vernon Park.
We lived across from St Paul's church and my dad worked at Cornbrook on New Bridge Lane. I used to run as fast as I could over the narrow metal bridge to take to him some fish skin and bones for the cat in the the factory.
I took piano lessons from a lady on Alpine Rd. I wasn't good. I remember two tunes, Golden Slumber and the Blue Danube.
I remember buying home made ice lollies (Roses Lime and Vimto) from a small shop on Carrington Rd.
I think the fish and chip shop in Portwood was called Hinchcliffs or Finchcliffs. We use to get free fish bits on our way home from the swimming baths. I don't know about three free chips. Maybe they came after they realised fish bits weren't the healthiest of treats.
My name is Lynn Wood nee Corless. My friends were Leslie and Wendy Parkinson, Pat Walker, The Yare's and Ann ???. I lived on Great Portwood St. from 1946 until 1957, we then moved to Woodsmoor Lane, Stockport.
I now live in Half Moon Bay, 20 miles south of San Francisco, CA. A long way from Portwood days but never forgotten.
I would love to hear from others their memories from Stockport. The Bear Pit Christmas tree and the Town Hall Father Christmas were amazing. I went to Greek Street High School which later moved to Offerton.
