More about this scene

Behind the lychgate at the end of Manor Road rises the flint and stone tower of Holy Trinity parish church. The southern end of this road is in direct alignment with a Norman moated enclosure and a flat house platform in the pasture beyond the church. Between these earthworks is an earthwork known as the Cockpit, which is said to have been the venue for mediaeval cock-fighting. It is 100ft in diameter, with an entrance facing towards the church and village.

A Selection of Memories from Stourpaine

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Stourpaine

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

We used to often walk along the lovely River Stour, walk under Hod Hill then over the hill, down to the road, cross over to the lane that led up to Hambledon Hill, up to the top then back to Child Okeford. I think it was in the 1950s that a dig was done on the Roman fort on Hod Hill. In spring the hill was coverd in flowers, including the wonderful Bee Orchid.
