Stourport stands where the river Stour meets the Severn; it grew in importance after James Brindley built a canal junction there in the 1760s. The meeting of all these waterways proved important in the industrial development of the region. The rivers and canal are used for pleasure boating these days.

Looking back now I think I must have been terrified when my dad took my sister and I on the swing boats which swung out so far you could see the water of the river underneath you. As you pulled the rope harder the boat would go higher.
