The cinema and the row of shops were built in the 1930s on the site of the Rose and Crown Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in 1922. The red brick cinema with its Georgian front was similar in design to the Local Authority Offices of the period. The smartly dressed commissionaire, just visible in the doorway, welcomed patrons to both 'the pictures' and the restaurant on the first floor. The cinema was demolished as part of the post-war redevelopment, and its replacement building eventually became part of Winch & Blatch. The British Argentine Meat Shop Co (to the left of the cinema) became Dewhurst's.
