On the west side of the green area called the Croft, backing on to the river, are the workhouse and St Gregory's off to the left. Then comes the Presbytery and the red brick Roman Catholic church of St Mary and St John, designed by the Catholic architect Leonard Stokes, which opened in December 1893. The priest in 1900 was Father Augustine Peacock. The large house is the Victorian Croft Lodge with its single-story stable block.
