Throwley Way Baths

A Memory of Sutton.

If this is Throwley Way parallel to Sutton Hugh Street, then the now defunct Sutton High School for Boys used these erstwhile Baths for swimming lessons and competitions, right up to the school's controversial closure in 1962.

Hello Dagmar. I learnt to swim here in the late 1940s, whilst a pupil at Sutton High School for Boys. The teacher would walk along the side of the baths, holding out a pole from which was suspended a stout cord. At the end of the cord was a serge halter, which went across the chest and under the arms. This allowed us only to learn the breaststroke (and to swallow copious amounts of chlorinated water!). The site in Throwley Way is now occupied by a snooker hall.
