The Globe at Swanage was carved out of a great mass of Portland Stone, ten feet in diameter and forty tons in weight.The Globe is positioned to represent the position of the earth in space, with nearby benches marking the points of the compass.The Isle of Purbeck, that great peninsula sprawling eastwards into Poole harbour, is riddled with quarries.The railway station at Swanage was used to bring the stone to ships for transportation around the world.
