This view shows the eastern gallery of the underground cliff quarry with one of George Burt's inscriptions (centre left) giving its potted history: 'These caves were formed centuries ago by men making sinks and rick-stones. Smuggling was also carried out here, and both were discontinued about the end of the French Wars, 1814.' To complete the impression of a dungeon, outside its gated entrance (centre right), Burt erected an octagonal column which he had removed from Pentonville Prison in London.
