Swanley Fire Brigade

A Memory of Swanley.

I was born In swanley lane in 1944 and my dad was a part time fireman at swanley fire station. Does anyone out there have any details of the old fire station number 1 which used to be beside the old lullingstone castle by the traffic lights.
If my memory serves me right Mr Dawes of station road was the driver. Any info will help.

Hi !

Have just seen your post, you are right about the fire wagon driver, he was Ron Dawes who owned the Cycle shop, in station road, he also ran a vehicle recovery service which I believe is still run today by his sons.
I lived in Goldsel Road, and our near neighbour Mr. Alan Wilson, and his two sons Brian and Duncan used to man the wagon, they had no car, so when the fire alarm was sounded they had to run full pelt to the station. We all used to work in London together for an Insurance Company and traveled each morning from Swanley Station to Holborn Viaduct. When they had been to a fire the night before we always got the full account of what had happened the next day.
