More about this scene
The High Street, leading to the railway station (which opened in 1850, providing access to London and other parts of the country), was thriving in the decades before the First World War. It contained department stores, hotels, furniture shops and shoe shops, and it was noisy with horse-drawn vehicles and advertisement-adorned trams. In 1821 Swansea became the first place in Wales to illuminate its streets with gas lighting.
