More about this scene
Crossing Mary Street from the southern end of the High Street brings the explorer of Taunton to Vivary Park. Two fishponds - or vivaria - belonging to the Bishops of Winchester were to be found here in the Middle Ages. These impressive gates, restored in 2001, bear the legend Borough of Taunton and the motto Defendamus.
