More about this scene
Taunton had neither a Mayor nor a Corporation for much of the 19th century: its affairs were administered by the Market Trust. However, a new charter was granted in 1877, and a Mayor and Corporation were appointed. The Market Trust struggled on, but it was finally abolished in 1926.
