Under the two awnings on the left are Foster`s bakery (advertising Hovis above) and Clunas the chemist (advertising Iron Jelloids). Further down, on the pavement, is the town`s pump. Few Essex children were left untouched by the half-hidden smokestack on the right: it belonged to George Lee`s sweet factory at Mill End. The works` hooter was a familiar sound in Thaxted.
