Theydon Bois, The Green 2003

My lasting memory of Theydon is the walk from the station to my aunts house which backed on to the railway line. This was near the end of the war I think but I clearly remember a field full of the remains of downed aircraft . To me it looked like hundreds but I was quite young at the time. In September 1940 my wife, now 82 yrs, was bombed in Silvertown, East London docks. Her familyof 8 were taken to a scouts hut in Theydon Bois, Essex. From there they were moved to Budworth Hall, Ongar, Essex. then they were moved on to Torrells Hall, Willingale, Essex. Finally they found a home in Norton Heath, Ongar, Essex for the rest of the war. If anyone can remember can they post.

My brother and I spent very important years in Theydon Bois. We were only there for 5 years but they were probably the most formative. It was a very simple village. There was the school, far too small for the many children born at the end of 2nd World War.
