My First Memories Of Thornbury

A Memory of Thornbury.

Having been told I would be starting at Thornbury Grammar School in September 1955, a friend and I decided to cycle to Thornbury from our homes in Filton to see where we were going to spend the next five plus years.
The eight miles along the A38 were not too difficult and an hour later we cycled into the high street in Thornbury. It was a warm August day and as we passed Paveys we saw before us for the first time the High Street. We came to a halt and looked around. Nothing moved, no cars drove towards us, in fact no people were seen walking along the pavement or crossing the wide road. We had no idea where the Grammar school was. We looked around for someone to ask for directions. Nothing, we seemed to be the only living beings in Thornbury!
Of course eventually we did get directions and cycled down to stand and gaze at our home to be for the future, the seemingly massive buildings of the Grammar School!
After standing and gazing at the empty buildings for awhile, we turned around and set off on the return journey to home.
In the future we would arrive on the top deck of a bus each morning to begin our secondary education at the school.
