More about this scene
Thornton Dale lies 2 miles east of Pickering. This much-photographed cottage stands alongside the beck, in which trout can still be seen. In the village are Lady Lumley's Almshouses. In 1656 she also gave a bequest for a hospital and a grammar school to be built in the village. Trade here came from corn milling, spinning and weaving, and paper manufacture. Beck Isle Cottage was once the home of the village laundry maid.
