Ecclesbourne Road And Surroundings
A Memory of Thornton Heath.
I was born in Croydon in the mid 1950s and lived for while with my grandma in Ecclesbourne Road; the top end near where it joins Bensham Lane. There was a general store at the very top called Hart's.
I know that when I was young there was a sweet factory around the corner in Bert Road but I can't remember what it was called. Can anyone help?
Thank you,
Julie

the best of my knowledge was Crawfords and us local kids would wait at the factory gates to be given the sweets that were rejects, usually cough candy and that was a great treat, there was also a Charrington Beer plant on the corner of Ecclesbourne Road and Bensham Lane and past that going towards Brigstock Road there was a large factory called Redwings that later on became Gaskell & Chambers, non drip measures. I went to Elmwood Juniors then on to Norbury Manor Senior Boys and left School in 1967. Michael Cummins
