Thornton Cleveleys, Victoria Road East c.1960

More about this scene
The parade of shops (left) proclaims that a once quiet seaside village is becoming a busy township - we can see Ellwood's, the Midland Bank, a chemist, and a newsagent and tobacconist. Regular bus services came about rapidly; Victoria Road was the main route. It was once known as Ramper, a high dyke built (along with the draining of Thornton Marsh) to keep back the sea. The eastern end of the road leads to the restored Marsh windmill and its village complex, which was opened by the Duke of Westminster.
