More about this scene
In medieval times Tickhill, which lies 4 miles south of Doncaster, was more important than Sheffield; its castle, built about 1130, was one of the most important in the north - we can just see the castle mound (centre horizon). The Buttercross (centre left), erected in 1777, was restored in 1898. Behind it is the post office and library. The town has escaped industry, and because of this the South Yorkshire Joint Railway did not arrive until 1908.
