Nostalgic memories of Tilbury's local history

Share your own memories of Tilbury and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I remember my school days at Tilbury where I started school in 1934 at the Roman Catholic School in Calcutta Road and left in 1944 just a year before the end of the second world war In 1947, I was called up for National Service and during the last year of my service I was transferred to the war office in London where I lived during that time and never returned to Tilbury. It was in London that I met my future ...see more
I have a photo of my dad with a group of men waiting to go on a beano
I was just boy at the age of 6 when I was admitted to Tilbury Seaman's Hospital to have my tonsils taken out. I can remember seeing the big funnels of the ships through my ward window at the end. The wards were long, big and white with high ceilings, I remember being very sad when my mum and dad had to leave me, until the next day. I also can remember the ship's bell and pictures of many ships around the place. I ...see more
My Grandad was George (scissors) Jackson. He was a very well known and respected member of the Tilbury community. He ran his florist business from home in Auckland Close, serving many Tilbury families with cheap bouquets, funeral wreaths etc. I remember going to Covent Garden, London on the first morning train out of Tilbury with my nan, Rene, to buy flowers and calling into 'Elvins' shop in Dock Rd on ...see more
I was a trainee nurse at the Tilbury and Orsett hospitals from 1962-1968. A lot of the parties I heard of were either for the Medical staff or invites from the ships senior mess. I remember keeping a window open in the nurses home for those girls who were invited. The doors of the hospital were right next to the gates of the Dock and we often saw the immigration ships loading passengers for Australia ...see more
I used to attend the dances in Tilbury Hospital in early '60s - they were great fun. Does anyone remember them or any of the nurses from that time? I worked in Grays and played darts in the pub that was,Ii think, in the docks area. Does it still exist? We also went to the Worlds End on Saturday nights. Some times we got the ferry to Gravesend. There was a good night in I think in the Kings Head. I remember also walking on the shore of the river. I preferred Tilbury to Grays.
My auntie is the last remaining daughter of John Feenan, if any-one has any memories of John I would love to hear, maybe I could print them and show my auntie, at the age of 81 years now, and the Centenary this year would be great to see...
We moved to Stephenson Avenue in 1968. We were The Jackson family. We spent most of our days on the Daisy Field and the park, there was the tennis courts, the bowling green and as well as football pitches we had the cricket ground as well.
My father James (Jim) Staples was born in 1925 and grew up on Feenan Highway Tilbury.  (He died in 1998.)   He fought in the Second World War as a Royal Marine. He emigrated to NZ in 1952.  His siblings were Fred, Elsie, Ivy and Stan.  Fred, Elsie and Stan are now deceased but Ivy is living in New Zealand.   I am very interested in this area of England and would love to hear from anyone who might remember my father or his family.
My nan and grandad used to live in the dwellings near the hospital. Their names were George and Florence ARCHER. Has anyone got any photos of the dwellings or hospital. We cannot find any. My brothers still live in Tilbury.
