More about this scene

The Institute and Reading Room, built in an eclectic Arts and Crafts style, recalls the contribution to that Movement made by local protagonists like John Ruskin, Albert Fleming, W G Collingwood and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley. The latter two had acknowledged the influence on the Movement of Quaker simplicity in life-style and design. Many influential followers of that faith had lived around Tirril, including Sir Thomas Clarkson and Thomas Wilkinson. For many years Slee's Quaker Mathematical Academy flourished in Tirril.

I also lived here. My parents took over from Mrs Robinson. My father who had worked for Lowther Builders modernised the shop, opening it up and installing new counters. He also replaced the front window, which let in alot more light. It was very dark in there. I also went to Yanwath school. My uncle worked for the Milk Marketing Board and drove the churn lorries and later the bulk tanker that collected milk from Sockbridge Hall Farm which was down the field at the back.

My name is Sandra and I am the little girl on the right of the picture.  I lived at the Post Office with my grandparents, Mr & Mrs Robinson and I have very fond memories of growing up in the village.  The bigger girl with me was Ann Tatters who used to take me to school at Yanwath.

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
