Another view of the High Street at a less congested point and on a very hot and sunny summer's day: the shopkeepers have lowered their sun-blinds to protect their wares, and the lady on the left has unfurled her parasol. The London to Hastings road passed through this section of the town, and with the coming of motor vehicles this street became a traffic bottleneck.

No. 43 High Street was my grand-fathers shop but was closed when I was very young. It is quite a surprise to find it now I live thousands of kilometres away in Australia.
Although not so far back as 1890 I remember often being in the room with the large casement windows on the left hand side, in the 1950s and 60s. This was my father's office at his dental practice at 50 High Street. The surgery itself was at the rear, being quieter. The separate entrance has now gone and is incorporated within the shops below.
