School
A Memory of Tooting Bec Common.
I went to school at Tooting Bec Grammer School from 1954 to 1957 and worked after school and on a Saturday in a greengrocers on Upper Tooting Road. I have no idea what the shop was called but if I remember correctly it was near the bottom of Beechcroft Road.
My job was to deliver produce to the local area on an old black trade bicycle. On a Saturday the local baker used to ring a bell (I think) when he took bread out of the oven and my job was to dash to the local general store, buy fresh butter and then to the bakers to buy a hot loaf and back to the shop for all to enjoy the butter melting into the hot bread.
