All the hustle and bustle of the annual horse and sheep fairs, held in the village of Topcliffe, on the A168 trunk road south of Thirsk, until the late 1960s, are captured in this splendid photograph. Dealers cast a critical eye over a pony as it is led past them outside The Angel Hotel in the centre of the village.

I lived on Long Street in Topcliffe 1958-1972 - opposite the old school, which is now a post office, and therefore on the other side of the road from this photo.
