My name is Lyndon Evans, I was born in 1941 in the Police station during the war, my brother Stuart was also born in the station in 1938. My dad was constable Ted Evans PC1234 he was one of 4 officers based in Tottington with Sergeant Ellis in charge? I have loads of memories that I would like to share if any one is interested. My Family of Shepherd's have lived in Tottington for four generations. My Great Grandfather was Joseph Shepherd, born in 1924 in Bury. He married Emily Bennett whose family lived at 16 Club Row, Tottington. Her father was Thomas a Labourer. Joseph and Emily lived at 25 Turton Road (A few doors up from the Dungeon Inn) all their married lives and I have been told that they were the first house on the street ...see more
I came to live in Tottington full time in 1959 to attend Laurel Street school. We used to live in Beryl Avenues close to St Johns football and cricket field where we played endless games of football. We used to go to Island Lodge where one year we built a raft to go to the island out of railway sleepers. Another time when there was a drought we walked to it. I remember in the late 50's trudging all the way along Black Lane to go to Affetside School on Watling Street. The winters were harsh with the snow drifts well over my head! I lived at 324 Turton Road, in a row of around 4 houses, which, I've been told were once cow sheds! My father was Alfred McBride and his wife was Lillian.
