Brougham Street

A Memory of Tranmere.

My nan lived in Brougham Street and her mother lived next door. I remember playing alleys in the gutter, split the kipper, taking a jam jar in exchange for a ride on the roundabout, the Sally army marching along the streets, the corner shop selling Uncle Joe's mint balls, taking an old medicine bottle of water and a pickled onion butty to the park, playing on the bomb sites and Dr Pugh.

I lived on that street. Amazing. Reply and we can chat. Gary
Hi Gary, I believe the Brougham Street I once knew no longer exists, no more backyards, outside loos and entryways! Janet
Sorry for the late, late reply Janet. My family lived at # 44. We moved when the Street was knocked down around 1970. I am now 66. Lived there from age 4 to 17. So must have moved in around 1957.
I remember Union Street at one end of Brougham St. It had a lot of small shops back in the late 50s. The street ran all the way down to another perpendicular street whose name I can't recall. About a third of the way down from Union there were wider alleyways cutting through to Peel St and Cobden Street running parallel to Brougham on either side. Bonfires on bombed lot on Peel. BTW I was really good at gutter allies and had 100s of them.
Hi I used to live in Brougham Street. We moved when the houses were being demolished. Does anyone remember Tom's shop I think it was at the end of brougham Street he sold all-sorts, paraffin, tea pots etc... We called his shop the chandler's. I also remember Barton's paper shop at the end of Peel Street. All the kids had so much fun playing down the entries. I hope someone remembers these things also. Diane
