More about this scene
Inside, St James's Church has an air of newness; its five bays have wide arches and four-shafted slender piers. The panelled nave roof was restored in 1847, the same date as the chancel roof. The stained glass windows are as late as 1934, and 1910 in the chancel, but others date from 1848. Four Norman coffin lids and many tablets are among the monuments; these include the poet George Crabbe, 1832, lying on his deathbed clutching his Bible while angels hover over him.
