Eel Pie Island Bridge

A Memory of Twickenham.

The footbridge over to Eel Pie Island did not open until 9th February 1957, when folk were invited to a "Grand Gala Opening Night - A Three Band Session" at Eel Pie Island Jazz Club. They were treated to Cy Laurie, Bill Brunskill's Jazzmen and The Alpha Jazzmen

Many thanks for the information - we will update our database to read c1960. Ed.

I was in Twickenham Sea Cadets at the time the bridge was opened and part of a Guard of Honour, or was I on the tenor drum in the band, can't be sure, but I am sure I read the lesson at the dedication service on the embankment. I have never seen and photos from that occasion. Does anyone have any?
Rolloat, I work at the Eel Pie Island Museum as music historian, which is why I know the info about the Grand Gala opening. Have collected a couple of photos of the event: I'm at pete.watt53@gmail.com ...
I went to Eel pie in the early 60s when the great Trad bands played.
Acker Bilk Ken Colyer Terry Lightfoot Ken Sims and many more of the same.
What happy memories.
I jumped off the bridge for a 10/- bet, I enjoyed it so much I did it again for nothing.
What wasn’t enjoyable was travelling back to Sydenham soaking wet.
