More about this scene

In 1812 the celebrated English artist J M W Turner, R A, designed and built a modest villa for himself and his father in East Twickenham. Sandycombe (originally Solus) Lodge has altered little since Turner's time, although the gardens, small lake and extensive views towards the Thames have long since gone. In 2004 the Friends of Turner's House group was set up to support the owner of the house, Professor Harold Livermore, in his wish to leave the house to the nation. A charitable trust was established for that purpose in 2005.

My mother owned a dress shop in twickenham...and as I grew up I remember the swimming pool...which we broke into at night...about 1970...remember Pete Townsend wanting to rent our garage....and The Crown ballet school which was owned by the mother of Bonny Langford....as for Eel Pie island...unfortunately I was too young....but remember Barmey arms so well. Eel Pie Island Bridge
The footbridge over to Eel Pie Island did not open until 9th February 1957, when folk were invited to a "Grand Gala Opening Night - A Three Band Session" at Eel Pie Island Jazz Club. They were treated to Cy Laurie, Bill Brunskill's Jazzmen and The Alpha Jazzmen Many thanks for the information - we will update our database to read c1960. Ed.

Twickenham 1960 Turncock.
Re Mr Winkworths memory. I remember TURNCOCKS. The bike had a red frame as he says. Also I remember large white metal mudgards. The brakes were rod brakes rather than cable, however I could be wrong on this fact. The wheel rims were bright chrome and tyres may have been 26X 1 3/8. The big leather straps that held on the tools of the trade. I remember the turncock in Hanwell where I lived visited the street ...see more

My Home Town..
My family moved to COPTHALL GARDENS around 1955/6. I attended St James School (behind the police station) with my elder brother and younger sister. I have been back to see the school (the only known school with a playground on the roof) it is still there but is now an office block. We played on the river, around the river, in the river and sometimes came close to staying in the river. We had fun as only children can. ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
