A Memory of Tylers Green.

The Greenway Tylers Green 1966-73
We spent the first night after getting married in our new house at 46 the Greenway, Tylers Green, but despite promises by the builders, there was no electricity connected. so we only had cold food and drink before we left in the morning for our honeymoon. Our house was the only one finished in our terrace of six, with the garden area of rock hard bare earth left unfenced with just the minimal amount of builders rubbish and litter removed. In the evenings I would meet up with other new neighbours who would be out like me about the building site scavenging for odds and ends like screws and wood for shelving or sand and bricks for laying out the gardens.
Finances were tight with a mortgage so we had little furniture, but soon two children, however we loved where we lived the house and we had great neighbours, there were shops just around the corner with pubs and schools in walking distance and a great second hand bookshop up past the pond near the local garage. We would walk with the dog and children through the local footpaths and woods. Like many others I was a commuter to work but my wife Jacki had a cleaning jobs to help out, but later redundancy meant a move away after seven enjoyable years at Tylers Green.
We stayed up working late into the night cleaning the empty house before turning in to our sleeping bags on the hard floor. Our children had spent the evening and night at neighbours. We were away to a new job and home in Wiltshire early next morning, getting a super send off from some of our neighbours all waving and shouting from their windows.
