More about this scene

The fine and spacious interior was poor acoustically although in 1941 over 800 people crammed into the hall for the entire London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. 'The stage overflowed with performers'. There was no organ in 1927 but five years later there is a massive organ (see 85163) presented in 1931 by Master Cutler Sir William Ellis. The curtains have gone, two doors revealed and the seating on the stage is different. Headmasters' portraits hang on the walls. Many years later, a floor was added inside the hall so that it was divided into two sections.
