More about this scene
Upwey stands on the high road between Weymouth and Dorchester and features in Thomas Hardy's novel 'The Trumpet Major'. The famous wishing well was a favourite day out for early visitors to Weymouth, who would taste the water and think of their heart's desire. A shack nearby provided simple refreshments, and the tourists would sit on the surrounding benches.
