Grosvenor Road And Urmston, Always A Place In My Heart.

A Memory of Urmston.

I lived on Grosvenor Road, Urmston - the allotment end - from 1965 to late 1969 age 3 to nearly 8 years of age with my 2 brothers and parents (we then moved to Blackburn).
My daughter has recently moved to Roseneath road - just around the corner from Grosvenor Road and it's been a trip down a very happy memory lane;
I remember playing out all day - there were no cars on the road! There were so many children to play with - the Newtons who lived opposite - especially Karen and Eric, Leslie Howlett opposite and further up, Brenda Swann around the corner, Gary Neil Colin and Julie Armatage - Roseneath Road with a lovely garden, Mary Allan, Susan and Louise. All the lovely alleyways - not changed a bit. Our next door neighbour Mrs Hauserman was just so lovely. The road is so long and I can remember the sound of the pushchair wheels moving over the stone slabbed pavements. On sunny days the bits of tar in between the stone cobbles on the road would melt and I always managed to get some on my clothing and mum was not happy with me.

A kind elderly neighbour opposite, Mr Smythe let us go through his garden to enable a short cut to Golden Hill park. The hours we played there - the play ground was where the car park is now. I remember a 'giant' slide, a long horse with loads of seats, a roundabout, swings and climbing bars. There were regular band parades there. And the little library - we went at least evey week.

Davyhume Park was fabulous and it seemed to take ages to walk there. The 2 ponds are just as I remember them. However, I couldn't find the paddling pool or rocky arch that we loved to climb over.

We would go to the cinema once a year in the school summer hols. What a treat, although the seats felt prickly. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was the first film I ever saw at the pictures. I also remember watching The Sound of Music. We couldn't afford ice cream but mum would bring black cough sweets - we really loved them.

I started at Urmston County Primary school in 1966 (I think). The reception teacher was Miss Bell - she was lovely and came to school on her push bike. Miss Eddleston was the head mistress. There were railings across the playground splitting the infant and junior areas. Class mates that I can recall by name are;

Lucinda Cayton
Diane Patricia Wheeldon
Joanne Macello (she left before me - to Australia I think)
Penelope Cornish
Wendy
Fiona
Elizabeth

Although I have one individual school photo I would dearly love a copy of class photos. I have emailed the school to ask if there are any in the archives. However, if anyone has one or more I would be really grateful for a copy.

Margaret Watson ( nee Dexter )
