Eastwood Grange c1955 This is Eastwood Grange, but on the outskirts of Ashover are the remains of Eastwood Old Hall, built by Sir Thomas Reresby and blown up in 1646 by Parliamentarian troops
At this corner stands a war memorial to the Eastwood men who served in the Sherwood Foresters regiment during World War I.
Local historian John Eastwood records that a 13ft-long mermaid is said to have been washed up here in 1757, 'its head partly human and partly that of a hog, its extremity that of a fish.'
On the right is Eastwood's musical instruments shop — it appears to be on Briercliffe Road, but it is actually at 119 Colne Road. The sunblinds protected the various instruments from sunlight.
Eastwood is, of course, famous as the birthplace and home of D H Lawrence.

All those families moving into Astwood Bank`s new houses in the 1960s needed facilities, and the community does have a fair range.
A wide range of architectural periods is represented in Astwood Bank, though Victorian buildings are particularly numerous.
Unlike most churches, it has no tower to mark its position, and few people passing through Astwood Bank will even realise it has a church.

The village lies south of Redditch, with Studley and Astwood Bank encroaching from east and west.
Astwood Bank developed in linear fashion along the Ridgeway, which is now the main road to Pershore and Evesham.
Timber is being loaded onto barges, or lighters, to be towed up to Gloucester, where vast wood yards were sited along the canal.
