The ornate tomb on the left is inscribed 'Until the day break and the shadows flee away'; it is a monument to the Hirst family, and was first used in 1884.
Unfortunately, before the burial could take place the funerary decorations caught fire, and the body, portraits of the young man's dead ancestors and the great gallery went up in flames.
She remembers particularly the raid when Bryant and May's match factory was hit, and she had to drive into town while flames lit up the sky. Meanwhile, Ormskirk's social life continued.
