Nostalgic memories of Uxbridge's local history

Share your own memories of Uxbridge and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

So many memories of Uxbridge - I lived in Cowley Mill Road - two doors away from The Black Prince pub run by Mr & Mrs Guest - still remember the smell of beer and the delivery vehicles. Then opposite was a bakers (first owner I remember was a lady who went to Australia Mrs Lee) it then became Satchwells. Then on other corner was a grocer (think it was Mr & Mrs Hawked who had a very posh car). Further up was Mr ...see more
I recall as a little boy seeing Father Christmas it all seemed very magical as we sat in a sleigh which looked as we were moving forward through a snowy landscape till we arrived at santas grotto and a gift was given happiest days of my life .
I used to get off the bus in Windsor Street down by the post office. When I was young there was an optician on the left hand side. I can remember staggering out of there, when I was about six years old. They had enlarged my pupils and I could only see a blur. In the fifties I used to cross the road pass the pub and there was a jeweler with lovely goodies in the window which I used to admire. In ...see more
St. Andrews Church figured quite prominently in my early teens as it was my parish Church. Although not a religous person, I had to go the Church at least once a month as I belonged to 6th Uxbridge Scouts who were a Church Group, and if you belonged to them you had to go to church at least once a month. We hid a way at the back of the church and hoped that the sermon would not go onto long, but it always seem to go on ...see more
My grandparents pub, The Gardeners Arms. In Park Road, was a Harmans pub. There used to be an alley that ran down the centre of the Brewery. I remember two directors of the brewery coming in my pub regularly . MR Green and Mr Hutton. Does anybody remember Park Motor Batteries owned by Mrs Smith and run by Brian Parkes. It was opposite The Gardeners Arms.
I too remember the GWR railway line to West Drayton that passed by the top of our Road. There was an old metal railway footbridge that conected Whtehall Road to Manor Way which as a 4 year old I used to stand on with my friends as the old "push and pull" passed under enveloping us in steam. We thought it was good fun at the time and those expereinces lead to me to being a lifelong rail enthusiast. When I was 13 ...see more
Hi all This is actually a request rather than a memory. Would anyone be able to help me track down some information... Trying to find the name of a butchers shop on the Uxbridge Road in about 1967/1968. It was in Uxbridge itself, and apparently run by a short man with dark hair, of Maltese decent! A very odd question I know but I'm determined to track down the name of this butchers shop! If anyone can help I would be really grateful! Thanks!
Does anybody remember the dance instructresses , I know Clive was the manager. I used to go 1962 to around late 60s. I remember Karen Lacey she worked in the coffee cloakroom bar area . Happy days

Philip Cousins has jogged my memory yet again. The butcher he spoke of, Nicholls in Rockingham Road, was our local butcher as we lived in Rockingham Parade. I remember the rabbits, pheasants, turkeys and pigs hanging by metal hooks both inside and outside the shop. The floor underneath these was covered in sawdust to soak up the blood - unheard of in these' hygiene obsessed' days. The other butcher we used was ...see more
