N Block

A Memory of Walker.

I lived on N block from 1947 and moved to Benton in 1960. I went to West Walker school then Middle Street Techical High. My name then was Lily Aaron I am now Lilian Sanderson. I knew a Violet Pickering but I don't know if it was the same one as mentioned elsewhere under Rochester Dwellings. She had a sister Evelyn and a brother Dennis.

As a 5 year old I lived with my grandparents in R Block, Number 14. a Mr and Mr Hill lived further along near corner and kept pigs on a Walker small holding. I used to escort a girl called Gale to school who had a caliper on one of her legs. I attended west walker school for a short while. My Grandfather who occasionally drank in the Corporation Pub, was a jack of all trades, even regularly legally collecting bits of scrap metal to supplement his meager pension, fought at the Battle of the Somme. Had wounded badge for ARMY SERVICE.
ROCHESTER DWELLINGS. WALKER. * ORGINAL NAVAL DESIGN OR NOT.?. Many years ago I was told that the Rochester Dwellings, estate blocks were designed to look a bit like *Naval Type Barrack blocks*. There may be some truth in that because about a mile away at *Low Walker there was the great Naval Mitchell Shipbuilding Yard, historical influence, of of course.
