Rochester Dwellings.
A Memory of Walker.
I used to live in 10 U Block. I was born in 1935 and now at 87, I live in Katsuura, Japan. When the war broke out in 1939 I was evacuated to Dukes Wood Boarding School in Hexham. An excellent school where I received an excellent primary education. So different to Walker and I remember the Sunday walk to services at beautiful and historic Hexham Abbey
Towards the end of the war I was returned to 10 U Block - perhaps the school closed down temporarily ?? I then went to West Walker Primary School.
Having had a good prior education at Hexham I passed the 11plus for Heaton Grammar but Ma thought too posh and went instead to Middle St. Commercial School.
Yes indeed I remember the smell of the bone yard and seeing Da in his cloth cap leaving every morning for the shipyard and having punch ups and having to look after my two younger brothers (who now are both dead - Tommy by the way was a captain in the medical arm of the Australian Army in Vietnam).
Please I am so moved to see the video of Rochester Dwellings - and if anybody remembers the times I speak of please reply.
