Phil Munton

A Memory of Wallington.

I went to WCGS for boys from 1959 - 66. I never really appreciated the school until just before I left for Reading University - made possible by some brilliant teachers particularly Frank Mitchell and Michael Gainsbury despite my suffering glandular fever for much of my final Autumn term. I was more keen on all sport than the academic side although I was not popular with Mr Ireland ( of rock with Jock fame) for not being willing to play rugby for the school! He did forgive me though in my last year when through lack of competitors I agreed to run in both the 880yds and mile races at the district sports within half an hour of each other and came second in both. I never saw Bill Ireland again although he did pass on his regards through a mutual friend here in Scotland who knew him as president of the London Scottish Dance Association! Small world but although he died a few years back he would be proud I am sure that I can still remember the steps he taught us in the sword dance in P.E. despite the coercion by way of a rapier on your backsde. Happy Days!
