Saturday Night Disco In The 70s

A Memory of Walsall.

My girlfiend (now my wife) introduced me to the Femina disco at the George. It was the first club I ever went to. Loved the music. The DJ played a mixture of chart records, Motown and something called Northern Soul, which I thought were simply little-known American labels. Didn't realise how popular it would become. The atmosphere was exciting and, for me, quite exotic at the time. We danced our feet sore until 10.30 then it was time to head out to Bradford Place for my girlfriend's bus back to the Pleck. We started going to other venues in Walsall and often saw familiar faces from the Femina. Recall seeing Slade at the Town Hall just before they became famous. To be honest most of us left early thinking they were rubbish! Also got to see Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon at the Three Crowns. There was a massive punch-up in the audience durng their act. But they simply carried on regardless!
