My Great Grandmother.

A Memory of Wamphray.

My grt grandmother, Annie Murdoch nee Young, spent the last 40 or so years at Plantation Cottage (now Murdoch Cottage), Wamphray. I only met her once in 1954 and she is my first memory. Born on 8th August 1862, Crosshill Village, Ayrshire she met my grt grandfather at Gordiestone Farm, Glencairn in 1891 and married in 1893. They had five sons, James, Quintin, Thomas and Hamilton. George lived and worked at Saughtrees Farm prior to moving to Plantation Cottage.
Both George and Annie are buried in Wamphray Churchyard.
The astounding perspective that I have in regards to my grt grandmother Annie is that she was alive and working as a dairymaid when Colonel George Custard dies at the Battle of the Little Bighorn on 25th to 26th June 1876.
I've only been back to Wamphray once since then, a couple of years ago, and was struck by how little the cottage has changed (if one ignores the extension) with the wee window how on the gable.
What a quiet, scenic and peaceful resting they both have.
