Nostalgic memories of Wandsworth's local history

Share your own memories of Wandsworth and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I grew up in Santos Road, used this place every week. There was a bomb shelter in the grounds. Every summer the surrounding trees were full of pink flowers. I remember at aged 14 being allowed in the adult library, I thought I was so grown up!
I was born in Battersea in 1936. Educated at Latchmere School during the blitz (1940/41). I progressed to Surrey Lane School (now William Blake) After 2 years there a lovely teacher, Miss Oliver, must have seen something in me she recommended me for a place at Wandsworth Technical School of Building situated in Garrett Lane, I would cycle the 4+ miles from my home to school, in bad weather I ...see more
Lived on the Estate up until it was demolished, we were then moved to Wimbledon. 7, Lowestoft House was our address, Lowestoft was at the bottom of the Estate near the railway. Went to St John's primary school in Usk Road ( long since demolished ). Remember in the winter the ice on the inside of the windows, and freezing cold clothes to put on in the morning. The flats all had a yard, and the kids ...see more
Lived here on top floor of Morville House from 1955/6 till I left home and parents moved, in mid seventies. Went to Honeywell Primary School and later Eliot in Putney. Supported Chelsea and used to walk there down Trinity Road and under, the then, new roadway. Remember hearing we had won the world cup waiting for a number 19 bus at Tooting Bec to take me home! Loved walking on Wandsworth Common and actually ...see more
As a young schoolboy I lived in Wandle House off Garrett Lane which was owned by Peabody estates at that time. So, taking a walk from there, I can remember the rag and bone carts passing on their way home to the other end of Twilley Street passing by as I walked out from the gate at Wandle House, turning right to Garrett Lane to the corner where DER television rental was sited on the opposite corner. We ...see more
I lived in a prefab at 52 Calbourne Road. I started school with a broken arm and remember being very scared sometimes. One day, while my parents were visiting the house we eventually moved to in Woking, the school caught fire and we were evacuated to families in houses across the street. My parents must have been freaked out trying to find me and my brother Robin, who three years older.
Hello, I wonder if anyone knows what happened to the old church in Melody Road? I was a bridesmaid there at my aunt's wedding when I was tiny, around the mid 1950's.
Born at 158 East Hill, I remember Claytons with the clock, Wavy Line across the road where I worked when I was 11, Ted and Ellen ran that, Fontaines sweetshop where I bought Jubblies with my sixpence. Went to St. Annes school. Would love some old photos of the houses there but can't seem to find any. Mum and dad moved in after they had widened the road a bit and taken away the steps up to the front door. Originally they ...see more
Does anyone remember the gate at the back of 17 Spencer Park leading to the garden? Does anyone recall when the gate was bricked up and whether people used it to access the garden beforehand? If so, please post a reply to this message. I look forward to hearing from you!
I lived in the off-license in Fairfield Street from around 5 years to 19, 1959 - 1973. I went to St. Faith's church school then the Elliott at Putney Heath. I remember some of the memories already mentioned, playing football on the common, riding bikes around the frying pan, scrumping in the secret garden, fishing on Bolling Brook Common, Battersea funfair, swimming at King George's open air pool, ...see more
