More about this scene
The statue of King Alfred, erected in 1877, looks down on a car park taken over every Wednesday and Saturday by market stalls. The Market Place has changed very little since this photograph was taken. The 18th-century building on the left is timber-framed and infilled with red herringbone brickwork.
