Warrington, Horse Market And Town Centre c.1950

More about this scene
Warrington did once have a horsemarket, but it was further down the road, along Winwick Street outside Central Station. The last horsefair took place just before the First World War, long before this photograph was taken. Here, shopping expedition completed, mother and son walk down Horsemarket Street, passing Sterlings shoe shop on the corner of Lyme Street (right.) Perhaps she has just called in at the Fifty Shilling Tailors on the other side of the road, next to H Samuel's the jewellers. Notice how formally dressed everyone looks in the 1950s, compared with today's casual shoppers!
