Warrington, St Elphin's Church c.1955

More about this scene
St Elphin's crowning glory is its spire, soaring over the landscape at a height of about 281 feet, making it the third highest parish church spire in England. The Rev Quekett knew the value of a good slogan, and launched an appeal for 'a guinea for a golden cock!' His fundraising technique was successful, and the spire's weathercock was gilded with sovereigns. The original was replaced about 50 years ago, and was again gilded with sovereigns.
