More about this scene
Dominating the village is the 15th-century church of St Oswald's, its tower gifted by Robert Washington. The family arrived from Durham in the 13th century and were ancestors of George Washington, America's first president. The Washington coat-of-arms, three mullets and two bars, can be found in the church and the stars and stripes are flown from the tower on Independence Day.
