More about this scene
On the upper reaches of the Wear and once a part of County Durham, Washington was where William Doxford built his first ships before moving to Pallion in the 1870s. In 1964 the former colliery village became the hub of the newly created Washington New Town, the idea behind it being to attract commuters and overspill from both Tyneside and Wearside.
