Climbing westwards, the Taunton to Barnstaple road crosses the well-treed and young River Tone Valley at Waterrow. From the road we look across the garden of riverside Tonecroft along the steep-sided valley of a tributary stream that descends from Heydon Hill. Rock Cottage, on the left, has had its render removed to expose the thin-bedded ancient Devonian sandstone rubble used for building on Exmoor and the western hills of Somerset.

Not The Post Pffice!
The house in the foreground is not the post office as the title of this postcard suggests, the post office is actually across the road in the background of the shot. The main house in the photo was known as Pink House and was where my gran and grandad lived for many years - Bill and Gladys Webber. Thank you for this information - I have passed it to our Archivist who will make the necessary changes. Ed

Granny's House
My granny was Gladys Webber who lived in Waterrow for most of her life. I lived there with her till 1953 but after that spent most weekends and school holidays with her. They lived opposite the Rock Inn and at Bovey Cottages next door to the Greenslades and for years Trevor was my best friend. I remember being taken to the Rock Inn as a child and sitting outside on a wooden bench with a packet of crisps and a lemonade ...see more

More Memories Of Waterrow
Dear reader, I have received some lovely messages since writing a few memories I thought I would add a few more. The Rock Inn I use to stay with my great uncle/aunty's public house, namely the Rock Inn, in 1958- 1965. The Pub was split into three rooms, the Snug, the Lounge Bar and the restaurant. The Rock Inn At Waterrow 1954 1965
The Rock Inn will alway have a special place in my heart. As a small boy I would spend as many holidays as I could staying at my uncle and aunt's pub The Rock Inn. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
